so what was the model that was a result of mondays painting marathon post?!

a converted justicar thawn :) 

im really pleased with this model and like how the SM head fits in, originally it was meant to be a half GK head similar to the 2 charecters ive done (see up on the top of the page) but then it messed up :( so, not wanting to use a paladin head i used this blood angel head and i must say it fits quite nicely :)

also the legs and stormbloter arm are metal, just so there more detailed! (the plastic GK legs are horrible!)

and the colour scheme is inspired by john blances GK out of the 3rd ed GK codex!

this model was also a first time for me to try shading with colours rather than black! the photos may not show it well but  the shadows are purple from a mordian blue:blood red mix! i also ran out of purple wash so i experimented with red washes on gold to tie the model together and it worked rather nicely!  

also the eye is drawn to the head, gems and spear because on a dark red mini the whit/green points stand out!

how to: painting marathon!

 on thursday afternoon i discovered my local GW was running a painting contest** for the 25th sadly i had no entry made:

so i did what i did for the GD (which i didnt even get 1st cut :L)
a painting marathon!
so this was for 1 high quality mini in 2 days: you probably could do a squad too ?
WHAT YOU NEED:
munchieses
drinks (NOT caffine/ energy/ very sugary: solely because youll get really shaky hands! mountain dew is a exception but here i have  fizzy water, elderflower and a TON of diluting juice with lemon juice, so sour itll keep me awake!)
paints and a model

music ( i had a large assortment of dubstep/dance to keep me awake, im sure lots of music will work too!)
rhythm
so how do you do it?
step 1)  paint a test section: teach yourself how to do a part of the model so you can relax and let yourself get into the rhythm of painting: its not good to fret about new coulors when your half asleep!
step 2)  plug music in : eat a biscuit: start painting!
step 3) when your fatigued/ shaking badly (i have terribly shaky hands) or the models is covered in wet paint and sit  back and listen to music until you can paint again!
step 4) repeat steps 2 and 3 until the model is done!

so have any of you lot done a painting marathon? any tips for others, or praise for me in all my amazing-ness!

** I won 3rd place in the squad category!  and the 25th anniversary was a blast: amusingly someone brought in some 2nd ed blisters (unopened) and the manager displayed them in the cabinet: after peeling off the £1 price tag :P hehe, and it was great to see minis a decade older than me :D

rainbow Eldar autarch DONE :)

yep the title says it all
the rainbow autarch is now in all his colorful finished glory :D

so if this is your first time here or reading about this project its quite simple: its my first finecast mini and i wanted to see if eldar can look good in RAINBOW colours unlike the current trend of dark and depressing!
originally it was a colorful rainbow mini (think back to 4rth/3rd ed before all these realism shennanigins)
however one night i decided to slightly mute some of the colours with a black glaze, which didn't turn out well: luckily thats been pretty much fixed :D

now onto the pics! (p.s. if the sword/base/face change color during the pics thats due to me taking a photo then being all like ' oh that needs fixed!')

you know what that is? swagtastic. or freshalishious, or *insert awsome made up word here*

luckily the sword wasn't dulled down and still is bright green :)

 I was going to post some more 40k WIPs but then i realized that another gemstone and a few glazes arnt all that interesting, and that you would enjoy this MUCH more instead :)     (2 have explosions. 1 is adorable and one had me falling off my chair due to hilarity!)

more autarch pics

tonights quick WIP is  of the autarch again!

as regular readers will know my camera cable is broken so i have been at a loss of content recently, however i now can use my phone for reasonable quality pics!   the colours are a tad more washed out but the focaus is slightly better!

notquite so rainbow anymore :P

the gems and failcast faceplate need some work though!

ahah the lightbulb setting!

i used the same base colour for both feather types, i think i may re-do this as the base of the feathers blend together!

and the backpack fell off :(

so thats it for tonight!

Tutorial: how to turn your video game screenshots into art!

 tonight's post is about turing those screenshots of your fave games into things nice enough for your wall!
and it dosn't use any expensive software! or a professional artist, just 10 minuets and some free software! :D

nice eh? (its my phone background! , yes im sad :L)

not quite as pretty

For  the example were not going to use skyrim (its far too pretty :P) so Im going to do a screenshot of a replay from a online match of  ' call of duty: modern warfare 3' as it isnt as pretty!
so the original

ugh  well not my desktop background!

step 1 : colour balance

i chose a slight red:to fit with the theme

step 2:  hue balance

colour balance normally make the colours very strong so i use hue balance to smooth it a little. but to retain the new colour

i made it slightly more muted

step 3: re-apply shadows

with many video games the models are simpler so on many places the shadows are not very strong so this stage strengthens the shadows and adds new ones.(e.g. easy too see on the helmet and gun, and the hand in the later photos)  (this is possibly the most time consuming stage, use a airbrush tool with a low opacity)

step 4: blackout nametag, crop image and add effects+ contrast

well you dont want a nametag across your pretty pic, or the HUD, so I crop these out and use copy and paste, the colour picker and a few other tools to smooth it out. I then used a translucent 'sparks' tool to add a small mussleflare and a smooth  translucent brush  to apply the red of the sights, watch and a small amount on the helm (the name blackout is quite tricky, i messed it up a little on the launchers side)

step 7: done: frame on the wall! 

looks as good as battlefield :P (kidding on for the BF effect lower contrast so its all grey :P)

woot it is red panda wednsesday! that day of the week when i blatantly nick images off google then get higher up  the image page than the original image :D (lol i work hard)
